Hawai'i Preparatory Academy
Founded in 1949, Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy is an independent K-12 coeducational school with a boarding program for students in grades six through 12 and Post Graduate. HPA provides students with exceptional learning opportunities in a diverse community located on the spectacular island of Hawai‘i, which boasts 80 percent of the world’s ecosystems. Unique courses include Astronomy, AP Environmental Science (in our internationally recognized Energy Lab), Forensic Science, Hawaiian Studies, Marine Science, Photojournalism, Sea Turtle Research Program, and Sustainable Living. HPA also offers activities such as an equestrian program, hula, outrigger canoe paddling, and scuba certification.
If you could choose any place in the world for a school, it would be difficult to find one that offers more gifts than this one. Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy is located on the northern side of the island of Hawai‘i, in a beautiful, rural setting that National Geographic named one of the best places in the world to live and play. One of the great advantages of an HPA education is our location. College admissions deans come to Hawai‘i and our college counselors have established strong connections with the most important people in the college admission decision process who are looking to diversify their campuses with the qualities and experiences our students possess. HPA students’ applications stand out because of the unique opportunities offered here and these college admissions deans get to know our students individually. HPA students also benefit from the strong mentoring relationships they share with their teachers in the classrooms, on the sports fields and courts, and in the dorms. The compelling letters of recommendation our teachers write on behalf of their students are a testament to the personal connections made here.
10 years before Hawai‘i would become America’s 50th state, HPA was founded. HPA has evolved to meet the educational needs of young people from around the world as they prepare for life in an increasingly complex world. While much has changed in our world since that time, our steadfast belief in academic excellence and the role it plays in the lives of young men and women has remained constant.
